Walter was fighting a fire at the Beachcomber Night Club and Polynesian Restaurant. The building was type 3, ordinary construction and had undergone several renovations prior to its conversion for a restaurant and night club. This resulted in several false ceilings and hidden voids. The fire was able to burn and spread in these voids undetected, resulting in a collapse that killed Firefighter Walter.
